Coney Wahlburgers now open!

Wahlburgers, the Boston-based burger chain from Wahlberg brothers singer/actor Donnie, rapper-turned-actor Mark and their chef brother Paul, has finally opened Monday on the boardwalk after months of delays.

The 6,800-square foot space at 3015 Stillwell Ave. — across the street from the original Nathan’s Famous — fell behind schedule due to a pending certificate of occupancy, which is issued by the city’s Department of Buildings.
The DOB told the Daily News last month that the chain was waiting on a construction inspection, in which the department had to check for exit signs, emergency lighting and any outstanding safety issues.
The former New Kids on the Block boy band members put all “The Right Stuff” on the menu including a BBQ Bacon Burger, beef hot dogs, tater tots and the vegetarian-friendly Portobello Mushroom Cap.
“What really drew us to this location is the rooftop. The view is just phenomenal — there's no better place to take in the sights of Coney Island while enjoying burgers and drinks with friends,” Donnie Wahlberg said in a statement.

Women's Pro Hockey coming to Aviator Sports Center

The New York Islanders won’t be the only professional hockey team to call Brooklyn home this coming season.

The New York Riveters of the newly formed National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) will play their home games at the Aviator Sports and Events Center located at Floyd Bennett Field.

Nicknamed for the iconic World War II-era “Rosie the Riveter” poster that became a symbol for women’s rights, the Riveters are one of the four inaugural teams that begin the NWHL season this October along with the Connecticut Whale, Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts. The Riveters will play their first home game at the 2,000-seat sports center on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. against the Boston Pride.

Waldbaums - Ocean Ave in Sheepshead Bay

Since A&P declared bankruptcy last month there has been a lot of talk about closings and takeovers of Waldbaums, Pathmarks and Food Basics. All owned by A&P.

I know the Pathmark on Crospey Ave in Coney is being taken over by Stop & Shop. Does anybody have any info on what is happening with the Waldbaums on Ocean Ave in Sheepshead? If so, please send the info in to this blog. I haven't heard any solid info on this store yet? Thanks.

Coney Tower renderings include Gap, Ralph Lauren, Duane Reade, and a Whole Foods!

Job applications for the building indicate its residential portion will be especially large, comprising 514,000 square feet to be split between 544 apartments. YIMBY’s tipster sent word that the unit count has been revised down to 524, possibly indicating ongoing changes. The retail component will total 162,000 square feet on the first three floors, replacing an existing 120,000 square foot strip mall.

While NIMBYs have expressed unfounded anger over the closure of the Trump Village Shopping Center, the new building will be a major improvement compared to the existing structure, bringing more retail, a significant number of new apartments, as well as community amenities (the smallest component will be a 16,000 square foot community facility space).

The building’s height is slightly larger than the 430-foot figure we first reported, which only measured to the highest occupied floor. 532 Neptune Avenue will actually top-out 470 feet above street level, giving a significant boost to the Coney Island skyline, which is currently dominated by clusters of 20-odd story apartment blocks.

With 162,000 square feet of retail to be included, the number of tenants in the new base is likely to be substantial. While no leases have been confirmed, the renderings include Gap, Ralph Lauren, Duane Reade, and a Whole Foods.

No completion date has been announced, but partial job permits were issued in early June, likely indicating that construction will soon be underway if it isn’t already.

Brooklyn Bidding Wars

Brooklyn's real estate market is so hot now that buyers aren't even limited by the asking price when it comes to securing the perfect home.

A study put out Thursday by StreetEasy, a real estate listings site, said bidding wars in the second quarter of 2015 led to homes in nearly half of the borough's neighborhoods being sold for more than sellers sought for them.

Homes around Prospect Park saw the greatest surge when it came to buyers crossing that threshold. Prospect Heights had a median asking price of $799,000 in the second quarter of 2015, and homes typically sold for 4.1% more than the initial asking price. Park Slope, meanwhile, had a median asking price of $1.05 million, and homes typically sold for 4% more than the asking price.

"It speaks to how competitive and willing buyers are to bid against each other," said Alan Lightfeldt, a data scientist at StreetEasy.

Adams welcomed the New York Cosmos leadership to Brooklyn Borough Hall on Thursday, to announce that the Cosmos’ opening game of the NASL postseason Championship in November will be played in Brooklyn and also to kick off the week-long Cosmos youth soccer camp that will take place at Pier 5 Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The Cosmos postseason game will be held at Brooklyn’s MCU Park in Coney Island, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, on November 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. ET.
