At the same time that the Cosmos are hoping to win development rights
at Belmont, the New York City Football Club—the Major League Soccer
joint venture of Manchester City Football Club owner Sheik Mansour bin
Zayed al-Nahyan and the New York Yankees—is scouring the five boroughs
for a site to build a soccer stadium of its own.
original plans for a stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park fell apart
amid concerns about the alienation of parkland for private purposes. A
succeeding plan to build the arena near Yankee Stadium fell apart after
the team failed to reach an agreement with a Bronx elevator company that
would have had to relocate to make way for the sports facility.
Since the Bronx deal went bust, the team’s real estate plans have remained an open question.
“I’ve heard conversations about Sunset Park and about the Coney Island, Gravesend area,” said one Brooklyn official.
