After a half-century allowing access to the Coney Island boardwalk, a signature sight of Surf Avenue has been torn down.
The pedestrian bridge connecting the West 8th Street subway stop to the boardwalk and aquarium was demolished overnight.
The bridge had fallen into disrepair and faced safety concerns.
The MTA, Parks Department and aquarium had all passed on responsibility for maintenance.
city plans to install a crossing light at the intersection, widen
sidewalks and create a new entrance to the boardwalk at West 10th Street
to compensate for the absence of the bridge.
