The Brooklyn Islanders? Borough President Marty Markowitz yesterday threw Brooklyn’s puck into the ring to land the Long Island hockey team, saying, “Brooklyn is the only place they should consider” if team owner Charles Wang makes good on a threat to flee Nassau County.
“Put everyplace else on ice,” Markowitz told the Post. “We’ve got lots of hockey fans, and we’d even let them keep their name since we’re technically still on Long Island.”
Queens officials also have expressed interest in the Islanders, saying Willets Point would be ideal.
Although Markowitz is okay with the Islanders playing anywhere in Brooklyn, the logical choice is the planned $800 million Prospect Heights arena expected to host the NBA’s Nets by the 2011-12 season.
